Learn practical woodworking and construction skills by building real projects for the skatepark.
Each Building Projects course gives participants hands-on experience planning, measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing a project from start to finish.
This course is for ages 10 and up! Adults are more than welcome to join our course! We want to teach everyone the basics of woodworking and construction principles.
Adults, parents, guardians of younger students are welcome to stay for the duration of the course and allowed to help their children if absolutely needed.
The goal of the course is to gain confidence and skill through experience, so we will encourage as much autonomy as possible!
First Project: Build a Slappy Box
Our first course will focus on building an approximately 8-foot-long slappy obstacle for Companion Skatepark.
The group will work together to build the obstacle from raw materials, including the frame, angled sides, riding surface, and round coping.
When the course is complete, the finished obstacle will become part of the skatepark for the community to use.
What You’ll Learn
Participants will get hands-on experience with skills such as:
Reading basic measurements and plans
Measuring and marking materials
Using common woodworking tools
Cutting and assembling components
Working safely around tools and materials
Understanding how skate obstacles are designed and constructed
Problem-solving and working together as a team
Instruction is hands-on, with an emphasis on learning by actually building.
How the Course Works
Building Projects meets once a week for four weeks.
Each session builds on the previous one as the group moves from planning and preparation to construction and final assembly.
Class size is limited to 10 participants so everyone has an opportunity to take part in the building process.
No Construction Experience Required
You do not need previous woodworking or construction experience to participate.
This course is designed for people who want to learn practical skills, work with their hands, and better understand how the things we skate are actually built.
We will provide safety gloves and eye protection.
All precautions for safety will be taken
A waiver must be signed at the beginning of the first class, acknowledging any potential dangers or risks involved in regular basic construction and woodworking
